Ashley Pickard, LMFT is a Certified Provider of Trauma and Tension Releasing Exercises (TRE®) and is currently offering in-person 90 minute TRE sessions.
Trauma and Tension Releasing Exercises ( TRE®) is a simple yet innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created and developed by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, Trauma and Tension Releasing Exercises (TRE®) safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, thereby calming down the nervous system.
When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged and allowed to return to a state of balance.
We are continually learning more about the body-mind connection. We are beginning to understand the somatic and the psychological effects of traumatic experiences as well as the effects of chronic, long held, stress. It is more important than ever to incorporate these findings into treatment.
According to the American Psychological Association, “When the body is [acutely] stressed, muscles tense up. Muscle tension is almost a reflex reaction to stress – the body’s way of guarding against injury and pain.” When a person experiences chronic stress, the muscles never get a chance to relax and as a result the body may respond with stress-related disorders, for example headaches, muscle tension/pain and other physical symptoms (https://www.apa.org/topics/stress/body). Muscle tension leads to hormonal and biological changes within the body affecting the brain and muscular structure. The same can also be true for long held chronic stress. If the chronic stress is not resolved, the body may respond with a variety of stress-related disorders that occur until there is a physical release of held tension and emotional/psychological resolution and healing.
Ashley has crafted 90 minute TRE therapy sessions to address both the physical/somatic and emotional aspects of held stress and trauma. Thus allowing the body a chance to feel safe and comfortable which promotes and supports healing.
During the 90 minute session:
- The client will have the opportunity to learn the exercises which are designed to bring about the tremoring mechanism and experience the tremoring process.
- The client will have the opportunity to learn the TRE self-regulation techniques which will allow them to use the TRE exercises on their own, without the therapist. These self-regulation techniques are important and useful in many life circumstances.
- The client will have an opportunity to debrief with the therapist any thoughts, emotions, sensations and/or memories that came up during and after the process.
After about 3-5 guided TRE® sessions with a TRE Certified Provider, most clients feel comfortable doing TRE® on their own, at home, before the counseling sessions and coming in for their normal talk therapy session. However, this is not required.
One of the most interesting and unique aspects of TRE® is that it does not require the client to cognitively process any trauma or past experiences in order for it to provide somatic and psychological benefits. Many clients do find that they would like to explore the sensations and emotions that come up during and after the session, while others only experience a relaxing and calm feeling afterwards, with no thoughts or emotions accompanying the experience.
